You might be amazed to know that when Coca-Cola was first created, it was initially used as a remedy for headaches. Invented by a doctor aiming to curb drug addiction, it was developed as a syrup. However, people enjoyed it so much that the company began selling it as a beverage.
Coca-Cola: Who Invented It?
Coca-Cola was invented by Dr. John Pemberton, a doctor who developed it while creating a medicine to curb drug addiction. Coca-Cola was invented on May 8, 1886, in Atlanta at Georgia’s Jacob Pharmacy, where Dr. Pemberton prepared a syrup for people to drink. When he introduced it, people enjoyed it so much that the company began selling it as a beverage.
Dr. John, who was a pharmacist in Georgia’s Atlanta created the syrup for Coca‑Cola in 1886.
“He carried a jug of the new product down the street to Jacobs’ Pharmacy in Atlanta. There, it was sampled, pronounced “excellent” and placed on sale as a soda fountain drink for five cents a glass,” said the official website of Coca-Cola.

From 9 Bottles A Day To Million Bottles
In its first year, Coca-Cola produced only nine drinks daily as compared to the current situation, where billions of bottles are sold worldwide. It was named Coca-Cola because it included caffeine and coca leaves.
Coca-Cola Reaches India
Coca-Cola started its journey in India in 1949, initially manufactured exclusively by Pure Drinks. But by 1977, Coca-Cola had to bow out of the Indian market; the reason being the foreign exchange regulations that required a majority stake to be held by an Indian partner.
Later, PepsiCo entered India, and Coca-Cola reintroduced its products after 1991.
